Open Question: What is available in Spain in terms of Financial/Banking job opportunities?

...and how does it compare with the opportunities in London in terms of pay? I am studying a Banking & Finance degree from LSE and want to consider all options. I think the prospect of working in a warmer climate in a (possibly) cheaper location is very exciting... Many thanks, sk. Resolved Question: How do you feel about ex-pats who when they move to other countries like spain?

and stick 2 fingers up to Britain having a go at its tax system, its laws and its climate etc and when the going gets tough they want to come back and reap all the benefits this country has to offer. For instance I know a couple who in their 40s moved to Spain. He was always barking on about how crap Britain was and now in his 60s and of ill health he wants free treatment off the NHS. Isnt that kind of like having your cake and eating it? Kew: I have to agree with you to some degree but it really can plss people off when they start by having a go at Britain, but I suppose we all make mistakes and if they do come back they should keep their mouth shut about how bad britain is. Kew: Cant say I agree with your edit. you are not making sense. In fact its a bit hypicritical.  more

Open Question: Spain, Where, Culture, The land, Climate, Culture?

I need some fact and stuff on spain and please can you answer on these Spain, Where, Culture, The land, Climate, Culture  more

Voting Question: American moving to Spain? (Long and Involved Question)?

Now, I am not basing my move off of anecdotal answers given on this or any other site. I am however, looking for anecdotes (small stories) to help guide me a little bit. This move I am thinking about making with my boyfriend will not occur until I have a good fiscal foundation and have everything as thoroughly planned as I possibly can. My question is for anyone who has either VISITED Spain or LIVED in Spain (stories from friends or family members are also welcomed). I have never lived in or visited Spain or any other Spanish speaking country in my whole life. Life in America has advantages and disadvantages. Most of the advantages are self-explanatory (familiarity with food, customs, lifestyle. Have access to many different geographies within one country, etc). However, some of its disadvantages are starting to worry me and leave with me with depression and anxiety. I am only 20 years old, but am already starting to feel the effects of this country. I see on American TV each day how people are becoming more and more against each other. I see the religious of America pressuring politicians and lawmakers into writing religious law. I see the economy continuing to decline while other countries are actually trying to curb its effect on their people. I am tired of the fast-paced, cut-throat, profit profit profit lifestyle. To me, it just seems like no one in this country knows how to slow down and enjoy life. You may ask, Why Spain? Well a few years ago Spain was one of 7 countries to provide equal marriage rights for all of its citizens. Here in America, only a handful of our States provide equal marriage rights, and there is a Federal law prohibiting the provision of equal marriage rights (on a Federal level). Also, I found that the other countries that provides equal marriage rights are not located in the climate I am looking for. With that being said, I chose Spain because of its climate. I do not like cold winters and I like hot summers. I was looking into the Valencia area also because of rain. I love the rain and would like to be in an area that receives rain. (If anyone could suggest another area that satisfies the above, please do so.) I also chose Spain because I have some familiarity with the language. I am not, by any means, fluent but I am able to pick out bits and pieces of written text or slowly spoken sentences. I love adventure and I also have a knack for visiting large cities. I also love travel (which is yet another reason for Spain). I will be close to many different countries in Europe with Africa to my South and the UK to the North. I am not looking for a 'magic pill' that will take away all of my woes. I am just looking for a better place that isn't as fast-paced but I am still able to enjoy some 'night life' and some adventure and culture. I am looking to get away from some of the political woes (including continuous war(s) that my country is involved in) and the whole dog-eat-dog social structure that defines America. Also, many political theorists posit that the current trend of social woes and political acts (war, taxes, budgets, etc) and other trends are pointing to a possible collapse of the United States (as it is known today) into smaller groups and/or States. Whether this is true or not is not part of this question. I would rather err on the side of caution. With all this being said, what does Spain offer? What would be the best place (and safest) for a homosexual wanting to enjoy a marriage with the one I Love? Is there much of a lifestyle and outlook difference? Since I am non-religious, is Spain (its government) lesser controlled/influenced by 'the Church' than in the US? Any tid-bit that you can offer, would be very helpful in guiding my decision.  more

Resolved Question: Ricky Rubio rumors: he's holding out for Knicks?

Rubio deserves more than the draft to frozenville Minnesota. The guy is from a Mediterranean climate so for non-basketball reasons alone he'd want to jet to New York! LOL Not to mention, New York more closely resembles the big city atmosphere of his homeland. ♣ Internet rumors: info out there that his father is talking closely with Knick's management and/or his agents are doing this. Also, something along the lines that the Knick's coach has close ties with 'Wolve's general manager and that they're doing behind-closed-door-dealings to jettison Rubio to New York? Lets put this in perspective: Rubio practically, single-handedly kept Spain close during their loss to the "Dream Tream Re-do III" (or IV?). Some might argue this point. But Rubio's contributions during that Olympic Finals game should not be ignored! ♣ Rubio in a 'Timba'wolves jersey? Get real, he'll be a wasted talent, sitting on the bench 3/4 of the season. ♣ Rubio in any other jersey: Lakers, Rockets, Magic, Mavericks, or Cavaliers, Spurs, etcetera and Ricky would spell NBA magic and ratings! ♣ We've all seen what European players can do for a team, just look at San Antonio! .....but, Minnesota! Someone dropped the proverbial ball in this draft. For the sake of basketball, who out there wants to see Rubio in a Knick's jersey? btw: 'Asker' is not a 'Sota fan.  more

Resolved Question: Spain's Green Jobs have FAILED so why is Obama Praising them and Copying them?

Going Green/Alternative Energy has failed in SPAIN and yet the Democrats in the Congress, Senate and even the Democrat President are copying this failed plan. Spain has over an 18% Un Employment Rate and the Green Jobs didn't create JOBS they added to the UN EMPLOYMENT RATE. WHY? Why can't the Democrats in our Government use our Natural Resourse and stop going with a FAILED PLAN? Below is the LINK: _____________________________________________________ http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/editorials/stories/2009/06/24/will24.ART_ART_06-24-09_A11_MLE94UP.html?sid=101 Let's not envy Spain's green jobs Wednesday, June 24, 2009 3:00 AM By George F. Will Why, Gabriel Calzada wonders, is the U.S. president recommending that America emulate the Spanish model for creating "green jobs" in "alternative energy" even though Spain's unemployment rate is 18.1 percent -- more than double the European Union average -- partly because of spending on such jobs? Calzada, 36, an economics professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, has produced a report that, if true, is inconvenient for the Obama administration's green agenda. Calzada says Spain's torrential spending -- no other nation has so aggressively supported production of electricity from renewable sources -- on wind farms and other forms of alternative energy has indeed created jobs. But Calzada's report concludes that they often are temporary and have received $752,000 to $800,000 each in subsidies -- wind industry jobs cost even more, $1.4 million each. And each new job entails the loss of 2.2 other jobs that are either lost or not created in other industries because of the political allocation of capital. Calzada says the creation of jobs in alternative energy has subtracted about 110,000 jobs from elsewhere in Spain's economy. The president's press secretary, Robert Gibbs, was asked about the report's contention that the political diversion of capital into green jobs has cost Spain jobs. The White House transcript contained this exchange: Gibbs: "It seems weird that we're importing wind turbine parts from Spain in order to build -- to meet renewable energy demand here if that were even remotely the case." Questioner: "Is that a suggestion that his study is simply flat wrong?" Gibbs: "I haven't read the study, but I think, yes." Questioner: "Well, then. (Laughter.)" Actually, what is weird is this idea: A sobering report about Spain's experience must be false because otherwise the behavior of some American importers, seeking to cash in on the U.S. government's promotion of wind power, might be participating in an economically unproductive project. It is true Calzada has come to conclusions that he, as a libertarian, finds congenial. And his study was supported by a like-minded think tank (the Institute for Energy Research, for which this columnist has given a paid speech). Still, it is notable that, rather than refute his report, many Spanish critics have impugned his patriotism for faulting something for which Spain was praised by Obama and others. You can find similar conclusions in "Yellow Light on Green Jobs," a report by Republican Sen. Kit Bond, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Green Jobs and the New Economy. What matters most is not that reports such as Calzada's and the Republicans' are right in every particular. It is, however, hardly counterintuitive that politically driven investments are economically counterproductive. Indeed, environmentalists with the courage of their convictions should argue that the point of such investments is to subordinate market rationality to the higher agenda of planetary salvation. Still, one can be agnostic about both reports while being dismayed by the frequency with which such findings are ignored simply because they question policies that are so invested with righteousness that methodical economic reasoning about their costs and benefits seems unimportant. For fervent believers in governments' abilities to control the climate and in the urgent need for them to do so, believing is seeing: They see, through their ideological lenses, governments' green spending as always paying for itself. This is a free-lunch faith comparable to that of those conservatives who believe tax cuts always pay for themselves by stimulating compensating revenues from economic growth. Windmills are iconic in the land of Don Quixote, whose tilting at them became emblematic of comic futility. Spain's new windmills are neither amusing nor emblematic of policies America should emulate.  more

Resolved Question: Do you think this is a good social studies 5th grade essay on Jamestown?

Jamestown Did you know that Jamestown started in the middle of a swamp four hundred years ago – and still is alive? Well, that’s the truth. Jamestown was a struggle to obtain and had both advantages and disadvantages. For example, once Jamestown survived a loss of seventy colonists! In 1606 a charter was given to a company to own a colony to gain gold and wealth for England. The very long lasting colony was overall successful. England is watching as their enemy Spain is gaining more and more wealth. Starting American colonies gained Spain gold, while England also wanted part of it. A group called the “Virginia Company of London” attempted to make a colony. This was England’s second attempt They received a charter to create the colony from King James 1 in hopes they will bring England gold and wealth. In 1607 three ships with supplies and colonists including John Smith- the Godspeed, the Susan Constant, and the Discovery - travelled until they reached a spot they thought was perfect. The spot was enclosed, great protection and invisibility against intruders. Also, there were trees for tying the ships up. They soon after realized their mistake. The land was swampy and the air contained swarms of disease spreading mosquitoes. Also, the water was unhealthy; it caused sickness and death. They built up a fort and created James Fort, which was later changed to Jamestown. The colonists of James Fort soon figured that improvements were essential to keep the colony alive. Lack of water and lack of food – their food was spoiled and rats infested their corn – was the cause of this guess. The population dropped seventy colonists from the arrival. A major improvement was the election of John Smith. At the time, someone thought they struck gold and people wasted time digging for nothing. When John Smith was elected he made “Those who do not work do not eat.” This meant everybody had to do work such as construction dens, fishing in James River nearby, and building wells for water. This caused a great benefit for the colony. Another improvement began when on an exploration they discovered a confederacy of thirty Indian tribes. The leader Chief Powhatan communicated with John Smith, who was the current leader. A relationship of trade slowly began with exchange of many varieties of food including oysters, fish, corn, beans, venison, bread, wheat, and other supplies. This played a role of preserving the colony. Also the daughter of Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas, donated food in times of starvation and visited often. John Smith learned Powhatan language in order to ask to corn. Another improvement occurred when Smith fled from an accident. Without Smith and harsh climates that colonists weren’t adjusted to, the colony worsened. But before the colony fell apart from retreating colonists, Lord De La Warre forced them back. They returned and Lord De La Warre helped create a city with rows of houses and church, now names Jamestown. its not done, working on it  more

Voting Question: Is Islam a religion that needs to be monitored within the USA?

I am not a racist, firstly, a religion is not a race, and secondly, having concerns about the behavior of certain groups within a religion does not make you a racist. The USA has relatively few Muslims, roughly 90,000, and when you consider the size of the USA, this isn't that many at all. Take a country like the UK with a relatively small land area, it has about 3 million Muslims, France has about 5-6 million, Germany also has 3 million, and Spain has about a million. Even smaller, less economically developed countries like Poland has about 30,000 Muslims, which per capita is more than the US. Most of these are recent immigrants also. Basically, if you take Europe (or even the EU) as one whole entity, there are millions of Muslims residing in Europe, the majority of which are recent immigrants from North Africa and the Middle East. The increasing number of Muslims in Europe has caused problems, and has led to several serious terrorist attacks, such as the subway bombings in Madrid, the subway and bus bombings in London, the attack on Glasgow airport, and various smaller incidents that have happened around Europe perpetrated by Muslim groups. The scary thing about terrorist attacks perpetrated by Muslims in Europe is the fact that most of the terrorists have actually been citizens of the European country. It is scary that the bombers on the underground in London, and the people who attacked Glasgow airport were all supposedly British citizens. These people had been brought up in the UK and had been indoctrinated in the UK. Europe has built up a situation where some Muslim youth are becoming subject to brainwashing and encouragement to hate the West and in some cases being encouraged to commit violent terrorist attacks. This is not helped by the fact that in Europe, Muslims generally live in communities that generally isolate themselves from the majority of the population, or at least are less open to Muslims than they are to Muslims. This in some cases creates a climate of fear and suspicion for other groups. So far the USA has largely managed to avoid a situation such as this, while 9/11 was an extremely violent and very large scale attack, the people who perpetrated the atrocities weren't US citizens, and had not lived in the US for any significant period of time, they had been indoctrinated outside the US. What, for me, makes the Islamic terrorist attacks committed in Europe more worrying, and quite frankly frightening is the fact that these people are often citizens of European countries, have been brought up in European countries and have been brainwashed and indoctrinated in European countries and no attempt seems to be made to stop this. It's ridiculous. Islam is a growing religion in Europe, and is probably going to increase in the US, do you feel that Islam will function fine in the US, or do you feel it is a religion that needs to be monitored in the US to ensure that no Islamic groups are taking advantage of people, and attempting to brainwash people with warped and dangerous ideologies. Do you feel the US government needs to put measures in place to help prevent Muslims in the US from adopting and "us - them" mentality and try to encourage integration into US life as much as they can? I am from the UK, and here little has been done to prevent isolation, Muslims are almost encouraged to isolate themselves, and in the major cities, there have been Islamic schools set up which are funded by the tax payer. It is ridiculous. To be honest, while some may disagree, I have great admiration for the manner in which the US has handled the treat for terrorism to the Western world. While I think Iraq was probably a mistake, I feel the US military and allied forces are doing great work in Afghanistan and that I support entirely. I can understand why people would consider Iraq to be an unnecessary war, but anyone who considers the invasion of Afghanistan to be unnecessary and wrong is extremely naive. TomuCruz: No one is denying some White Europeans have treated other races badly, but that is largely in the past. The people of today have no control over their ancestors behaviour and as a result shouldn't be considered accountable for it.  more

Resolved Question: Prickly heat rash moving to warmer climates?

Hi I had heat rash last year on holiday in Spain and suffered quite badly from it. This has only happened once, although it has been in the forefront of my mind since thinking about moving abroad. Would I eventually acclimatise to the heat? Mark K, that was a very bad attempt at humour. If you knew anything about heat rash then you would know that applying sunscreen has nothing to do with it, if anything it blocks the pores and makes it worse!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and I only get it on my legs.... no where else.  more

Resolved Question: England May Become More Like Portugal in Climate?

Future Changed - Parts of Britain may become more like present-day Portugal as global warming takes hold this century and changes weather patterns and landscapes, said Natural England, the government’s environmental adviser. The Dorset Downs hills in southwest England may experience summer droughts and intense winter storms, causing soil to erode, beech trees to decline, streams to dry up and freshwater species to die, the group said on its Web site. “By 2080 the climate may resemble that of present-day Portugal,” it said in the March 31 study. Portugal, about 995 miles (1,600 kilometers) south of England, has a hotter, drier climate than the U.K. and shares a frontier with Spain. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601102&sid=awnw4lZ8XbPo&refer=uk  more

Voting Question: PLEASE check this essay!!!?

You dont HAVE to read the whole thing.. but im not i native english speaker so any help is apreciated!!! After Columbus discovered The Americas in 1492, many conquistadors followed him to become rich. These conquistadors took over large amounts of land really fast. They were beating the natives all the time. But why didn’t the natives win? The Spanish were not smarter than the natives. What the Spanish did have that really helped them were advantages that the natives either didn’t know about or didn’t have. Out of many advantages there were I have chosen to talk about three, geography, germs, and steel. Natives had a great disadvantages when the Spanish came, some that scared them and others that surprised them. In the time of the conquistadores, geography played a big part and it was in favor of the Spanish. The continent of Eurasia was spread from east to west so this made the continent very similar in some aspects. For example the climate didn’t change much, so when people were traveling there was nothing new; everything was expected to be that way. Spain had many neighbors that could be reached easily, objects such as swords and armors were all acquired from other countries close to Spain. The landscape of Spain was flat so people could build farms and domesticate animals. Spain was a more productive county since only half the residents had to farm; the other half could have other professions. On the other hand the Americas were large from north to south. If someone were to travel from the top to the bottom they would pass by different climates, landscapes, crops and animals. The news was not easily spread there because of those reasons. At the same time there were two big empires who never heard of each other because of the geography. The Incas also lived in mountains so farming required lots of men and lots of time. Most of the population devoted their lives on farming. There was no time for other inventions, and no people to get ideas from. Clearly geography was in favor of the Europeans leaving the American natives with a big disadvantage. When conquistadores were fighting against natives they had a huge help that come before them; invisible but deadly it was smallpox. Smallpox was brought to the New World by the Spanish. This deadly disease was super contagious, and it spread through the body fast. The natives were the only ones who suffered from smallpox though. Centuries ago the Spanish went through a great smallpox epidemic, it swept through Spin killing the population. Only 10% survived because of their strong genes. The immunity to smallpox was passed on through the generations soon all Spain was immune to smallpox. Unfortunately the Inca had no immunity to smallpox. This was their first encounter with it. So the disease killed most of the population, leaving the Spanish only a few survivors to conquer. Having less people on the way was good when it came to battles since many soldiers had died. Obviously the smallpox epidemic helped the Spanish alot during the conquest. European production and use of the Steel also helped the Spanish conquer the Inca Empire. The Spanish were the first to create the “perfect” fighting sword; it was called the espada robera. The actual idea of the sword came from the Middle East. But after many centuries of Spanish blacksmith working with steel, they made a sword that had an arch but didn’t bend. The sword could also slash and stab people with no problem. Another advantage is that the sword doesn’t need to be recharged, so it´s even faster than a gun. A Spanish holding a sword was enough to frighten an Inca. So when they were on horses the Inca were terrified, making the Spanish job much easier. A scared Inca didn’t fight back; therefore the sword was a vital factor to the Inca conquest. Spanish were significantly aided by geography, germs, and steel. Their conquests changed history. But they also wiped out thousands of people in the empires they took over. Things that the Spanish brought to the New World may have confused the natives making them a weaker and easier target to conquistadors. Never did the natives give up unfortunately what they did wasn’t enough to drive out the Spanish.  more

I know its quite long, read what you can and tell me if im wrong about anything, any of the facts or anything.. Spain is a country located in southwestern Europe. Mainland Spain is dominated by high plateaus and mountain ranges, such as the Sierra Nevada. Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast, and two autonomous cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, that border Morocco. Resolved Question: What should i bring to Spain? I'm 16?

I'll be there for 11 days with a group of students from my school. We will be visiting Madrid, Cordoba, Merida,Seville, Toledo, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Since we are a visiting group we will be walking a lot. We will going out to dinner as well though. We are not allowed to wear jeans (!) Would anyone be kind enough to make me a shopping list? I don't exactly know the climate or the fashion in Spain.... We are going at the end of March and early April. I did ask my teacher about what to bring clothing wise. And she was talking about linen pants and loafers and cheapo ugly "practical and touristy" clothes. I want to look good lol. She says no jeans not because they don't wear them there but because there is a difference between how we wear them. She doesn't want us to look like sloppy americans. What she doesn't realize is that 1) i never wear them sloppily and 2) american teens loooove jeans.  more

Resolved Question: Do almond trees self-pollinate or they use some other pollination method?

Also, I've been having so many negatives on planting one on my area, but I've also been receiving some positive hopeful posts; they have all let me more confused. One of the hopeful answers told me that they can grow in hot climates like Spain, but my uncle also told me that these trees need a cold period so that later the almonds can be produced in hot climate. Is this true? I live in northern Mexico and in between mountains so weather is very varied: steppe, dry climate on normal altitudes and wet, cool on mountains. Summer 30 to 40 celsius; Harsh sun on mild winter, 10 to 20 celsius, sometimes (more rarely) 0 to 15 celsius. 25 celsius on fall and spring. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.  more

WSJ: Cap-and-tax a great deal … if you don’t measure the costs

by ToddK on June 25, 2009 Economy Killer…From: HotAirDemocrats have hailed the CBO estimates of the costs per family of their new cap-and-trade carbon-emissions scheme, which show an impact of only $175 annually.  What they don’t tell voters, the Wall Street Journal explains, is that those costs begin to sharply escalate in ten years.  Democrats also fail to mention that the cost estimates of the CBO come just from the trading mechanism and nothing else:To get support for his bill, Mr. Waxman wa more

Solar Energy from Africa Could Power Europe

Europe could soon be partially powered by solar energy harvested in North Africa, if a new project called Desertec become reality. The project aims to capture solar energy with a method called concentrating solar power (CSP), transferring it from the desert to Europe through high-voltage transmission lines. Last week, a group of German businesses announced plans to pursue financing for the project, which is expected to have a price tag around €400 billion, or $555 billion. From The New York more

Tune Your Diesel Engine For Better Performance by Pete Stubbings
